Abstract | Detailed profiles of the ethnic, racial, male, and female populations of 1985 graduating high school seniors are presented, based on findings of the College Board's Admissions Testing Program and the Student Descriptive Questionnaire. The degree of similarity in background and experience can be assessed for males and females and for the following racial/ethnic groups: American Indian, Asian/Pacific American, Black, Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, and White. Comparative data on the educational and family backgrounds for each of the student populations are followed by detailed profiles by group. Information is included on: regional distributions, parents' educational training; annual parental income; family income, student part-time employment in high school; English as the best language; type of high school and secondary program; number of years of study by subject; degree-level goals; intended areas of study; and scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), Test of Standard Written English, and SAT Achievement Tests. To show the effect of family and educational background on test scores, SAT math and verbal percentile scores (25th, 50th, and 75th) are indicated for the study groups for each of the background variables.
